Namanga Oldonyo Orok Location and Distance
Oldonyo Orok is a hidden treasure trove on the edge of Kenya. The hill is close to the Kenya-Tanzania border and about 155km from Nairobi city. The Oldonyo Orok forest is a protected and gazetted area by the Kenya Forest Service. The forest is primarily home to many rare indigenous plants and herbs. Additionally, Namanga Hills is also home to unique species of wildlife.
Significance of Namanga Hills & the Host Community
Notably, the Oldonyo Orok forest mountain range provides water sources that supply water to the neighboring community. The dominant community is the famous Maasai people. However, Namanga, a border town, has many other communities from different parts of Kenya. In brief, this is due to the vibrancy of the business and border activities. Hence, Oldonyo Orok is an essential water source during dry seasons. Significantly, the hill and the forest are of great value to the Masai community, the host community. Maasai society in the past days also performed transition events for boys transitioning to Moran warriors.
