Take to the Skies Above the Great Rift Valley

Kijabe Hill rises on the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment โ€” 160 kilometres north of Nairobi, the ridge drops away to reveal one of the most dramatic aerial landscapes in East Africa. On a clear day from the launch point at 2,100 metres, you can see Lake Naivasha shimmering blue on the valley floor, the Aberdare Range rising to the east, and the Rift Valley walls extending north and south to the horizon.

Tandem paragliding at Kijabe puts you into that view. A certified pilot runs the takeoff, controls the flight, and lands safely โ€” you sit in front in your harness and experience 15 to 30 minutes of open-air Rift Valley flight. No previous experience is required. No fitness test. No jumping or falling. Just a running launch from the escarpment edge, followed by the silence and the view.

This is the original Wild Springs paragliding experience โ€” the most accessible introduction to tandem paragliding in Kenya, flown from the finest escarpment launch site near Nairobi.

What You See From the Air

The Kijabe escarpment is one of the finest natural paragliding launch sites in East Africa. The Great Rift Valley opened over 20 million years ago โ€” the same geological forces that created it also created the escarpment edge that makes Kijabe a world-class paragliding site. The thermals rising off the valley floor give consistent, reliable lift throughout the June to November flying season.

From your harness during the flight, the landscape reveals itself in layers: the Kijabe forest immediately below the launch, the patchwork of smallholder farms on the middle slopes, and then the Rift Valley floor opening to an enormous flat expanse 600 metres below. Lake Naivasha is visible on clear mornings โ€” a blue oval 50 kilometres north. The Aberdare Range rises behind you to the east. The Longonot volcanic crater is visible to the northwest on good visibility days.

This is the view. 15 to 30 minutes of it, in silence except for the wind.

Flight Season at Kijabe

June to November โ€” Peak Season at Kijabe Hill

The Kijabe escarpment flying season runs from June to November. The southeast trade winds and the thermal activity off the Rift Valley floor combine to create consistent, reliable paragliding conditions. Clear visibility across the valley is best in July and August.

December to March โ€” Alternative Sites: Iten or Tala

During the off-season at Kijabe, Wild Springs operates tandem paragliding at Iten (Kerio Valley, West Kenya) and Tala (Machakos, Eastern Kenya). Both offer outstanding landscape views in different terrain. Contact us to confirm the active site on your preferred date.

Safety and Pilots

Every Wild Springs tandem paragliding flight is conducted by a pilot holding certification from the Kenya Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club (KHPC) โ€” Kenya's governing body for free flight sports. All equipment meets international safety standards. Flights only operate under safe weather conditions โ€” if conditions are not suitable, you get a full reschedule at no cost or a full refund.

AMREF Air Evacuation Insurance (KES 1,500) is mandatory for all participants. This is not an optional comfort item โ€” it is a required safety net for any highland outdoor activity in Kenya.

What to Bring

Sturdy closed-toe shoes โ€” sports trainers or hiking boots. Long trousers. A warm layer โ€” the escarpment at 2,100m is significantly cooler than Nairobi. Sunglasses. A camera or smartphone if you are not purchasing the GoPro footage. The pilot will advise on camera positioning during the safety briefing.
