Why Samburu Is Not Like Every Other Kenya Safari

Every Kenya safari brochure features a lion at sunset, elephants crossing a river, and a leopard in an acacia. You can see all three in the Masai Mara. The Mara is extraordinary. It is also very busy.

Samburu is different in a way that takes some explaining, because the species involved do not appear on standard Kenya safari checklists.

The Samburu Special Five are five large mammals adapted to the arid semi-desert of northern Kenya that you will not see on any other reserve in southern Kenya - not in the Mara, not in Amboseli, not in Tsavo. They evolved for the heat and aridity of the north. You have to come north to find them.

This reserve is also home to Save the Elephants — the global elephant research organisation founded by Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, headquartered inside Samburu. The elephants here are individually known by name in one of the world's longest-running mammal research projects. And the adjacent Reteti Elephant Sanctuary — the first community-run elephant orphanage in Africa — is accessible as an add-on.

Fewer tourists. Species found nowhere else in Kenya. World-leading conservation work happening in real time around you. That is the Samburu case.

🦓 The Samburu Special Five + Astro Experience

The Samburu Special Five are five species adapted to northern Kenya's arid conditions and not typically found in southern Kenya. They are the primary reason specialist safari travelers and return visitors to Kenya make the journey north.

1. Grevy's Zebra (Equus grevyi) - the world's largest wild equid and one of its most endangered. Distinguished from plains zebras by narrow vertical stripes that extend under the belly, large rounded ears, and a white belly with no stripe. Critically endangered — Samburu hosts a significant percentage of the global population. Stand a Grevy's and a plains zebra side by side, and the difference is immediately obvious.

2. Reticulated Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) - the most visually distinctive giraffe subspecies, with sharp geometric patterns divided by clean white lines forming a net-like design. The pattern is unique to each individual - no two reticulated giraffes are identical.

3. Somali Ostrich (Struthio molybdophanes) - the largest bird on earth, recently reclassified as its own species. Distinguished from the common ostrich by blue-grey skin rather than pink. Males develop vivid blue-grey colouring on the neck and thighs during the breeding season.

4. Beisa Oryx (Oryx beisa) - a large antelope with long straight horns and distinctive black-and-white facial markings. Adapted for extreme heat — capable of tolerating internal body temperatures that would kill most mammals without sweating.

5. Gerenuk (Litocranius walleri) - the "giraffe-gazelle." A slender antelope with an extraordinarily long neck and legs, capable of standing upright on its hind legs to browse from tall branches. Nothing else looks like it.

🐘 The Three-Reserve Ecosystem

Most safari operators treat Samburu as a standalone 165 km² reserve. It is not. It is the most-visited part of a contiguous tri-reserve system covering over 1,000 km² of protected land:

Samburu National Reserve (165 km²) - the northern bank of the Ewaso Ng'iro. The Samburu Special Five. Excellent predator activity including Samburu's famous resident leopard population. Save the Elephants research headquarters.

Buffalo Springs National Reserve - separated from Samburu only by the Ewaso Ng'iro River. Natural springs provide permanent water — crystal clear pools attracting hippos, terrapins, and exceptional bird life. The landscape is lusher and more varied than Samburu north bank.

Shaba National Reserve - the eastern reserve with dramatic volcanic rock formations, lava flows, and fewer visitors. Joy Adamson of Born Free lived and worked here. Joy's Camp occupies the site.

Wild Springs game drives cross the river and enter Buffalo Springs when conditions allow - one safari day, two reserves, double the environment.

📅 Best Time to Visit Samburu

Unlike the Masai Mara, Samburu has no high-crowd season when the reserve becomes traffic-heavy. This is a northern specialist destination with consistently manageable visitor numbers.

SeasonConditionsSamburu Advantage
June–October⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ DryWildlife concentrates at river · firm roads · clearest light
December–March⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ DryExcellent predator activity · Special Five at peak visibility
April–May⭐⭐⭐ WetLush landscape · fewer visitors · some tracks difficult
November⭐⭐⭐ Short rainsGreen and photogenic · manageable road conditions

Photography note: Samburu's red laterite soil and the golden morning light produce some of the most distinctive safari photography in Kenya. The Ewaso Ng'iro riverbank between 06:00 and 08:00 is the finest game photography position in the reserve — elephants in the water, crocodiles on the banks, raptors in the acacia canopy above.
