Kimakia Forest Bathing Trek
Aberdare Ranges is an awe-inspiring landscape. Our love for adventure leads us to a new hiking trail at the edge of the Murang'a border with Kiambu County.
The journey starts from Nairobi, with a scenic drive through the Kenyan countryside. It takes about two hours from Nairobi to the Trek starting point.
The trail follows a fisherman's path down to Chania River. We cross over and start climbing up towards Ragia River. After about an hour or so of hiking through nature's beauty—including views from both sides!--we reach our destination: Kimakia Falls! It is impossible not to be amazed by how much water falls. Thrashing over the rocks with majesty on this mountainside-in fact, you could say that no other place in Africa has anything even close. But before I go any farther with my story, why don't you reserve a seat and experience it yourself?

Event Details
Elephant Hill Hike
The Elephant Hill hike is, without a doubt, the most popular trail in the Aberdare Range. The Elephant hill hike earns different reactions from hikers that dare to attempt it. Some say it is the most treacherous and challenging trail in Kenya, while some say it's all overrated. Find out why the elephant hill hike is the most sought trail in Kenya. If you plan to hike elephant hill, it is paramount to get this information beforehand.
About Elephant Hill Hike
Elephant hill hiking distance
The Elephant Hill is an elephant-shaped hill located in the Aberdare Range. It is the fifth-highest trail of the Aberdare range trails. The hike starting point lies at the south end of the Aberdares in Kinangop Constituency, Nyandarua County. The hiking trail is 9 kilometers. From the starting point at Njabini gate, 8,203ft or 2,500meters above sea level, to its summit that straddles. The summit is at an elevation of 3657.6 meters 12000Ft. The elephant hill hike starting point takes about two to three hours from Nairobi CBD. The distance is about 104 kilometers from Nairobi to Kenya Wildlife Service Njabini Gate. The park entry fee and clearance are prerequisites at this office before proceeding to the forest trail.
Hike Trail Sections
Mostly Muddy, comfortable hiking boots are recommended.
The Shamba System
The actual elephant hill hike starting point is about two Kilometres from the Njabini gate office. In between is a section of the forest that comprises agricultural farms. Through a cooperative partnership between the Kenya wildlife service and the neighboring communities, the neighboring community owns the farms. The practice is popularly known as the Shamba System. With the shamba system, farmers access state-owned forest land to tend to young trees in this section. They can then intercrop perennial food crops until canopy closure which helps protect against erosion. The community as whole benefits from these sustainable practices. They produce much-needed income while at the same time keeping the forests that our hiking playing grounds.
Elephant Hill Trekking Trail
The trail leads to a section of ancient indigenous trees. This forest unit comprises ancient trees such as Cypress, Podos, and Old man beard trees. While trekking here through this section, brings a nostalgic feel of how many places in Kenya were decades ago. Thanks to human activities. The track is wet primarily because of the grass's morning dew. An ideal pair of hiking leg gaiters will ensure you remain dry and comfortable for the rest of the trek.
After about a kilometer trek the sight of bamboo gate signage welcomes you to the bamboo-section. The hike through the bamboo is strenuous but well worth it. The bamboo section gets less sunlight due to its ever-covering canopy. Therefore, the trail is primarily muddy. It gets even worse, slippery, and harder to climb with little rain. A pair of solid trekking poles will be of great aid and avoid frequent falls. In addition, trekking poles will help you distribute your backpack's weight and that of your body evenly. Another must-have while attempting the Elephant Hill hike is a proper hiking boot. One that is light, with excellent grip, hardy, waterproof and breathable.
Elephant Hill Weather
The bamboo cover ends at Desperado (point of despair), 3255 Meters (10679.13 ft). The sight of the remaining part of the hike makes many conclude they can not proceed further. Hence the name, Desperado. A lot of people give up at this point. Some even sleep dead after getting here. From the top of Point of Desperado, you can see a neatly hemmed bamboo forest below. Magical views of Sasumua dam in bright weather are a sight to behold. Desperado point is an ideal lunch point before resuming the trek to the Tail.
The journey to the Tail is a combination of a rocky and steep track. While trekking up, you are likely to feel the altitude and slow you down. The weather, too, from the point of despair, changes in seconds. One minute it's clear, the next you can't even see ten meters away. It is paramount to learn how to layer for the mountain and clothes, gear, equipment, and accessories to bring.

The most scenic trail in the Aberdare range
Event Details
Mount satima and the Dragons' Teeth is one adventure you won't want to miss! If you're looking for an epic hike with stunning views, look no further than Mount Satima.
Mount satima is also known as Le satima or Ol Donyo Le Satima. The name emanates from the Maasai dialect. Ol Donyo Le Satima translates to "mountain of the bull calf." Firstly, It is the highest mountain in the Aberdare Range. Secondly, Mount Satima is the third highest mountain in Kenya. Thirdly, among the seven best moorland trails of Aberdares. Mount Satima is the most scenic trail in the Aberdare range.
Mount Satima Altitude
A Trek to Mount Satima will expose you to high elevation. Le satima peak straddles the northern end of the Aberdares. Notably on the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley. The trail summit lies at 4001 meters above sea level. Hence, an ideal preparation to improve your general fitness and strength before the climb. Importantly, preparing you for similar altitudes of the high elevation mountains of east Africa.
Mount satima hike
Lesatima moorland trail is an ideal preparation hike. In particular, if one plans to climb Mount Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro, or Ruwenzori peaks. High altitude adds them to the list of the most challenging trails in Kenya. However, natural beauty and the splendor of distinct vegetations will thrill the heart and make the soul rejoice. Lesatima can be accessed from Shamata Gate, Mutubio Gate, and Wandare Gate.
Dragons Teeth Kenya
Dragons' teeth are one iconic attraction in the Aberdare range. To illustrate, Dragon's Teeth is a collection of jagged rocks that soar dramatically above the constantly wet moors in northern Aberdares. Besides their beauty, these iconic rocks are favorite spots for rock climbers.
Rock Climbing in Dragons' Teeth
Rock climbing is a popular activity in Le Satima Dragons Teeth. Rock climbers camp here for the crag. The moraines are between 3,600 m and 3,800 m on the mountain's northwest. Rock climbing in Dragon teeth offers a unique training experience. Suppose you intend to attempt the Batian peak. The high elevation at Ol donyo Le Satima prepares you for the Batian peak.
Mt Satima Routes
There are two trekking trails on Mount satima. Namely, Wandare trekking tail and Shamata climbing trail. However, there are several access gates. They include;
- The Shamata Gate
- Wandare Gate
- Rhino Gate
The Shamata hiking trail
Shamata trail is the most scenic trail while trekking at Satima. Also, it is the easiest to trek up Le Satima because of its flattish terrain.
Wandare Trekking Trail
Wandare trail is shorter than the Shamata trail. However, it's a little bit steeper. In particular, while approaching the summit. In addition, it is less scenic compared to the Shamata trail, which hosts the famous Dragons teeth.
Mt Satima Weather
Mount Satima is a high-elevation mountain. The weather gets colder and more intense winds as you go higher. There's also less air at these elevations. In brief, the altitude is likely to slow most climbers down. Therefore, knowing what to bring for the Mount Satima and Dragons Teeth hike is essential.

Together they form a more prominent Zuti Forest. Locals refer to the Zuti forest as a Thuti Forest. The white man coined the name since he couldn't pronounce Thuti. Njigari Forest boasts a beautiful trail with a forest rain cover and a Bamboo section. Two powerful Waterfalls and River Thuti, which flows down to Athi and Tana, drain the Indian Ocean. The Waterfalls acted as a post office for Mau Mau Mau freedom fighters because of their exclusive location.
The Trail is 18 Kilometres from the starting point. The Trail ends at Zuti forest, Plant Nursery.

Event Details
Kihuri Forest bathing trek is one of the best hiking trails in Kenya Daytrips. It is part of the southern Aberdare National Park block. Kihuri village is in Othaya, Nyeri County, about 50 miles (or 81 km) north of Nairobi. This trail neighbor Mucharage forest, which is yet home to another beautiful trail; Gatangu Waterfalls Chase. The trail starts at the Othaya treatment plant which is also known as the Kihuri water treatment plant.
Kihuri Forest, Zuti forest, Njigari forest, and Gura Forest forms the larger Aberdares Southern block. Aberdare environs play a very role in water catchment function. It is one of the five main “water towers” in Kenya. The other four water towers include Mt Kenya, Mt. Elgon Mau Complex, and Cherangani Hills.
We invite you to create indelible memories with us as you connect with nature, trekking in the fresh breeze of the ever-beautiful bamboo forest. The beauty of this place will really blow your mind.
