Mount Longonot is about 2780 meters [9121 feet] above sea level, making it one of the highest points around the Great Rift Valley. The name “Longonot” comes from the Maasai word “Oloonongo’ot, which means “mountain of many spurs or steep ridges.” 

Where is Mount Longonot found?

Mount Longonot is located in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya Nakuru County. Approximately 72 kilometers northwest of Nairobi as measured from Galton Fenzi Monument. It lies between the beautiful Mount Longonot Nation Park, a natural paradise teeming with wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and many species of birds and scenic landscapes. The mountain is surrounded by other attractions, including Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate National Park. The Ngong Hills are a chain of hills located just south of Mount Longonot. They offer stunning views of the Great Rift Valley and Nairobi.

 It last erupted over 150 years ago in the 1860s. The volcanic activity at that time led to the formation of the striking crater that we see today, which spans over 7 kilometers in diameter. Future eruptions cannot be ruled out.

To get to Mt Longonot, you can take a bus or rent a car from Nairobi and follow the A104 highway toward Naivasha. The driving will take about an hour and a half, depending on traffic.

How long does it take to climb Mount Longonot?

Climbing Mount Longonot takes around 4 to 6 hours to complete a round trip, depending on your fitness level and pace. This time includes the time required for rest breaks and taking in the breathtaking views along the way. The hiking trail takes you through lush forests, steep slopes, and the impressive crater rim.

From the starting point to the first stopover take approximately 40 minutes, then another 40min to 1 hour up to the rim. Going around the rim takes about 1 hour. There are steep areas that can be challenging, so this is not necessarily an easy hike. You can opt to hike to the rim, which is a good option for families.
